About Us

The Book Mongers is a duo of book lovers, Addie and Amanda who started their business after finding that there is a disconnect between books that need a new home and the readers that want them. According to a 2012 National Wildlife Federation-sponsored report an estimated 640,000 tons of books are sent to the landfill annually. At an assumed average weight of 4 pounds each that equates to approximately 320 million books that are discarded each year and not being recycled. This is the most recent study on record according the Environmental Protection Agency.

Our Mission

The Book Mongers are dedicated to fostering a culture of literacy and community engagement by actively gathering and redistributing books throughout our diverse communities. Collaborating with a multitude of partners, including community members, businesses, and libraries, we strive to create a synergistic ecosystem that ensures the perpetual circulation of books.

Our mission is twofold: to connect books with eager readers and to rescue these literary treasures from the fate of landfills.

Guiding Principles:

  1. Community Collaboration:The Book Mongers believe in the power of collective action. By working closely with community members, businesses, and libraries, we harness the strength of collaboration to gather a wide variety of books that reflect the diverse interests and needs of our communities.
  2. Synergy in Redistribution:Our mission is to create a seamless flow of books from those who have them to those who seek them. Through strategic partnerships and thoughtful distribution, we ensure that books find new homes, promoting a continuous cycle of sharing knowledge and stories.
  3. Environmental Stewardship:We are committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By rescuing books from potential landfill destinations, we contribute to the reduction of waste and promote a greener, more eco-conscious approach to the disposal of literary resources.
  4. Reader-Centric Approach:The heart of our mission lies in getting books into the hands of readers. Whether it's through community events, collaborations with educational institutions, or initiatives like Books for Prisoners, we strive to make literature accessible to all, fostering a love for reading and lifelong learning.
  5. Inclusivity and Diversity:The Book Mongers recognize the power of diverse narratives. We actively seek books that represent a wide array of voices, perspectives, and genres, ensuring that our redistributed collections are inclusive and reflective of the richness of human experiences.
  6. Gratitude and Recognition:We express gratitude to our partners, contributors, and the communities we serve. The success of The Book Mongers is a collective achievement, and we acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of all those who contribute to our mission.

In pursuing these principles, The Book Mongers aspire to be a catalyst for positive change, creating a network where books thrive, readers flourish, and the shared love for literature strengthens the bonds within our communities.
